SOURCES OF INFORMATION

One of the most useful things you can learn about a subject is how to find out more about it. No single publication can give you all the information you will need to perform the duties of your rating. You should learn where to look for accurate, authoritative, up-to-date information on all subjects related to the naval requirements for advancement and the occupational standards of your rating.

In this section, we will discuss most of the publications you will use for detailed information, for advancement, and for everyday work. Some are changed or revised from time to time, some at regular intervals, others as the need arises. Be sure that you have the latest edition. When using any publication that is kept current by means of changes, be sure you have a copy in which all official changes have been made. Canceled or obsolete information will not help you do your work or advance in rate. At best, it is a waste of time; at worst, it is likely to be dangerously misleading.

NAVEDTRA PUBLICATIONS

The Naval Education and Training Command and its field activities come directly under the command of the Chief of Naval Education and Training. Training materials published by the Naval Education and Training Command are designated as NAVEDTRA. NAVTRA and NAVPERS designators on publications will remain as originally assigned. The designators of publications printed hereafter will be changed to NAVEDTRA as each publication is revised. The naval training publications described here include some that are absolutely essential for anyone seeking advancement and some that are not essential, but extremely helpful.

NAVEDTRA 10052

Bibliography for Advancement Study, NAV-EDTRA 10052 (latest edition), is a very important publication. It lists required and recommended rate training manuals and other reference materials that should be used by enlisted personnel who are working toward advancement. NAVEDTRA 10052 is revised and issued annually by the Chief of Naval Education and Training. Each revised edition is identified by a letter following the NAVEDTRA number. Be sure that you have the most recent edition.

If extensive changes in standards occur in any rating between the annual revisions of NAVED-TRA 10052, a supplementary list of study material may be issued in the form of a NAVPERS notice. When you are preparing for advancement, check to see whether changes have been made in the standards for your rating. If changes have been made, see whether a NAVPERS notice has been issued to supplement NAVEDTRA 10052 for your rating.

The required and recommended References are listed by paygrade in NAVEDTRA 10052. Since you are working for advancement to third class, study the material that is listed for third class. Remember, however, that you are also responsible for the References listed at the FN level.

Some rate training manuals in NAVEDTRA 10052 are marked with an asterisk (*). Any manual marked in this way is MANDATORY that is, you must complete the manual and the associated course at the indicated rate level before you can be eligible to take the Navywide examination for advancement. Each mandatory manual and course may be completed by (1) passing the appropriate nonresident career course that is based on the mandatory training manual; or (2) passing locally prepared tests based on the information given in the training manual.

Do not overlook the section of NAVEDTRA 10052 that lists the required and recommended References relating to the naval standards for advancement. Personnel of ALL ratings must complete the mandatory military requirements training manual for the appropriate rate level before they are eligible to advance.

The References in NAVEDTRA 10052 that are recommended but not mandatory should also be studied carefully. All References listed in NAVED-TRA 10052 can be used as source material for the written examinations at the appropriate rate levels.

Besides training manuals, NAVEDTRA 10052 lists official publications on which you may be examined. You should not only study the sections required, but also become as familiar as possible with all publications you use.
