To sharpen a lead to a conical point with a sandpaper pad, follow this table:

Expose 3/8 inch of lead.
Lay the lead against the sandpaper pad at a steep angle. (See figure
1-8)
Draw the lead back and forth across the sandpaper while
simultaneously rotating the pencil between your fingers to create an
evenly sharpened point.
Clean work space and wash hands before working on an
illustration.
Figure 1-8 illustrates the angle of the lead to the sandpaper pad.
