Press    Processes,    Continued Gravure The gravure process is opposite that of letterpress in that the image area is etched below the surface of the plate. The raised nonimage portion of the plate is wiped clean of ink. Paper, pressed against the plate, lifts the ink out of the etched areas. Figure 1-2 shows the gravure process.
