TM   ll-5895-1412-12&P REFERENCE  INFORMATION  (CONT’D) GLOSSARY OF COMSEC AND  CEOI  TERMS ALTERNATE NET - The net used when the primary net communications cannot be maintained  due  to  jamming  or  interference. AUTHENTICATION  -  A  security  measure  designed  to  protect  a  communications system  against  acceptance  of  a  fraudulent  transmission  or  simulation  by establishing  the  validity  of  a  transmission,  message  or  originator. AUTHENTICATION  SYSTEM  -  Authentication  systems  are  provided  to  prevent unauthorized stations from entering friendly radio nets. There are two methods  of  authentication:  challenge  and  reply  and  transmission authentication. BATTLEFIELD  ELECTRONIC  CEOI  SYSTEM  (BECS)    - System includes the BGU and its peripherals. The purpose of BECS is to eliminate NSA-produced paper CEOI systems, to reduce response time and to increase user’s flexibility. BASIC  GENERATION  UNIT  (BGU)  -  The  personal  computer  (Hewlett-Packard  HP- 110/111) component of BECS, plus the peripheral devices: the disk drive and printer. CALL SIGN   -  A  three-character  combination  of  letter-number-letter  used  to identify  a  command,  activity  unit  or  element  in  establishing  and  maintaining communications. CALL SIGN SHARING - Allows different nets to be assigned the same call signs for each time period. CLASS - A grouping of up to 20 zones. The  total  frequency  requirement  for  a class equals the number of nets in the largest zone. Nets selected for a reuse plan are grouped into zones and classes. COMMUNICATIONS-ELECTRONICS   (CE)    - Embraces the design, development, installation,  operation,    and  maintenance  of  electronics  and  electromechanical systems  associated  with  the  collecting,  transmitting,  storing,  processing, recording,  and  displaying  of  data  and  information  associated  with  all  forms  of military  communications. COMMUNICATIONS-ELECTRONICS  OPERATION  INSTRUCTIONS  (CEOI)  -  A  series  of  orders issued  for  technical  control  and  coordination  of  the  Communications Electronics operations of a command or activity. It provides guidance needed to insure the speed, simplicity, and security of communications. The CEOI normally  contains  call  sign  assignments,  frequency  assignments,  suffixes, signs  and  countersigns,  pyrotechnic  and  smoke  signals,  and  complete supplemental  instructions. COMMUNICATIONS  SECURITY  (COMSEC)  -  Measures  taken  to  prevent  unauthorized persons from gaining information of value from your communication. COMSEC includes:  (l)crypto-security;  and  (2)transmission  security;  and  (3)emission security;  and  (4)physical  security  of  communications  security  materials  and information. 1-10
