DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY TECHNICAL BULLETIN
ALL WHEELED VEHICLES: USE OF SWIVEL-
TYPE HOOK FOR SECURING TIRE CROSS
CHAINS
Headquarters, Department of the Army, Washington, D. C.
15 November 1965
Table 1. Tire Sizes and Swivel Hook Federal Stock
1. Purpose. This bulletin provides information to using
Numbers
personnel on the use of a new swivel-type tire cross
chain end hook.
2. General. The new swivel hook is presently available
in four sizes. The size of swivel hook that is to be used
is based on tire chain size, which is determined by the
wheel or tire size.
Table 1 lists the tire sizes from which the required swivel
hook Federal stock number can be determined.  The
table is applicable to both single-type (TS) or double-type
(TD) chains.
The three larger size hooks are provided with washers,
whereas no washer is included with the smallest size
hook.
The washer improves the hook  rotating
characteristics of the larger hooks and allows the cross
chains to rotate on the tires. This rotation prevents the
cross chain from wearing too quickly on one side and
increases its service life. Swivel hooks can be installed
or replaced without use of tools, provided the old cross
chain end links are removed.
3. Availability. The swivel hooks are currently available
in the supply system.  The hooks will be listed as
authorized tire chain repair parts in TM 9-2300-223-20P
at time of next change or revision.
4. Application. New swivel hooks are not to be installed
unless a specific cross chain requires replacement. A
replacement cross chain now includes connecting end
links which must be removed and discarded from each
end of the cross chain. In the future, cross chains will be
provided without the end links.  Remove end links by
spreading end link with a suitable tool.
Refer to TM 9-1870-1. Also, refer to this manual to
determine the correct number of cross
