INTRODUCTION

One of the first things that a military law enforcement officer must learn and

understand is the range and limits of his power to enforce the law.

This lesson

will teach you what you can and cannot do. It will show you where you can operate

and the sources of your power.

Remember, however, that the situation may differ

from one military installation to another. Before starting duties at a new post,

therefore, you should have a good working knowledge of local laws and policies that

relate to your authority and to your jurisdiction.

Additionally, you need to

understand the different laws which operate on and off of a military installation,

and the limits of court-martial jurisdiction.

Since you are a representative of

the military justice system, it is necessary for you to understand the basic

framework of that system. Out in the field, suspects may challenge your authority.

You must, therefore, know just what your authority is.

Uncertainty on your part

may produce disaster.
