DAMAGE CONTROL TRAINING

DC  training  effectiveness  is  directly  related  to  realistic  training  scenarios.  Too  many  simulations  weaken  drills,  causing personnel to lose interest and enthusiasm, which significantly degrades training effectiveness. DCTT disclosures must be realistic  and  clear;  manipulating  indicators,  staging  realistic  props,  generating  smoke  and  standard  disclosure  techniques  will reduce confusion and increase training effectiveness. The following is a list of recommended methods and techniques for the DCTT  to  utilize. FIRE Smoke  Generator · firefighter’s  proficiency · effectiveness  of  smoke  boundaries · smoke removal procedures · emergency egress · smoke curtain effectiveness · NFTI training. –  Strobe  Lights · simulate flame · used in cableways or on electrical panel to simulate “C” fire. – Red Flashing Beacon - rotating light to simulate flames. Chem-Lights - simulate hang fires (use red if available). DCTI waving red flag or red lens flashlight or hand held battery-operated  fan  with  red  plastic  streamers. –  Black  cloth  taped  over  item  in  question  to  indicate  charred motor controllers, light fitting, etc. FLOODING Portable  pipe  with  holes  -  adaptable  to  1  1/2  inches  to  2  1/2 inches fireplug or stanchion - use on weather deck plug - tag valve open - excellent pipe patching trainer. Example is NSTM 079, Volume 2, page 12. Colored tape tied around firemain and run out along the deck  -  indicates  source  and  water  depth.  Use  grease  pencil on pipe to indicate leak for actual patching required. Chem-Lights - Used to indicated flooding; 1 light - 1 ft, 2 lights, - 2 ft, etc. (Use blue lights if available). Simulated Holes - Use cutout cardboard or steel plate - attach to bulkhead. Example in NSTM 079, Volume 2 page DCTT DRESS – Distinguising clothing markings - arm band, red ball caps, red coveralls, flight deck jerseys, etc. EMERGENCY  EGRESS – Use blindfolds for all personnel. – Use training EEBDs if sufficient quantities are available. DISCLOSURES AND SIMULATIONS –  Halon/CO2 flooding released: Pull pins on KIDDE switches  for  ventilation  and  alarms. – CO2 dumped in module/enclosure: Place white paper over glass window. – Fire/smoke in module/enclosure Place red and black design/flag  over  observation  window. – Alarms: Place chem-lights at several locations after fire party has extinguished main fire. – Sparking: Use welder’s sparking tool or strobe light. – Explosion: Bang on deckplates - the more noise the better the drills. REPAIR PARTY ACTION should include: Charge fire hoses for all drills. Conduct actual shoring and pipe patchine - (2 x 4s - cheap way to do shoring). Rig P250 - deep suction, Light  off  OBAs  as  practical  in  consideration  of allowance requirements. (Never use training canisters in a drill scenario.) Exothermic Cutters: Use topside on scrap metal. Casualty Power: Rig and energize. Rig Sub-Pump: Place pump in clean trash can full of water. 11.
